Barkas: A Fusion of Cultures and Flavors

Barkas, a lively suburb nestled in Hyderabad, is a melting pot of cultures with a significant population of Arab-origin individuals, predominantly hailing from Yemen. The roots of this community trace back to their ancestors who served in the military during the Nizam’s era, residing in barracks which gave rise to the name Barkas, derived from “barracks.” Despite their historical background, the residents of Barkas have seamlessly integrated into the local fabric while cherishing their unique ethnic traditions.

Culinary Marvels

One of the standout features of Barkas is its rich and diverse culinary scene. The neighbourhood boasts a plethora of roadside eateries and restaurants offering tempting kebabs, delightful cookies, refreshing tea, and renowned Mandi cuisine. Mandi, originating as a Yemeni delicacy combining rice and meat, has garnered widespread acclaim among food enthusiasts, even rivalling the beloved Hyderabadi Biryani, especially during the festive period of Ramadan.

Influence and Innovation

Abdullah Bin Masood Bashadi, a celebrated national football player and a descendant of Yemeni immigrants, played a pivotal role in introducing Mandi to Hyderabad. His esteemed restaurant, Mataam Al-Arabi, has become synonymous with authentic Arabic cuisine in the city, showcasing a blend of tradition and innovation. Alongside Mandi, the gastronomic offerings in Barkas extend to a variety of Arabian delights such as Kabsa, Majboos, Maqluba Quzi, and Saleeq Rice, each contributing to a diverse and enriching culinary experience rooted in Arab culinary heritage.

A Cultural Gem

In conclusion, Barkas stands as a shining example of cultural harmony and culinary excellence in Hyderabad. The seamless fusion of Arab and indigenous traditions has created a vibrant tapestry of flavours and experiences. Through its delectable cuisine and rich cultural legacy, Barkas continues to captivate residents and visitors alike, inviting them on a gastronomic journey that celebrates the depth of its history and the vibrancy of its people.
