Bilkis Khan: Steering Her Life Towards Independence

In the bustling streets of Delhi, Bilkis Khan emerges as a figure of resilience and empowerment. As one of the few female auto rickshaw drivers, she’s challenging societal norms and paving the way for women in traditionally male-dominated professions. With three children to support following a tumultuous 17-year marriage to an alcoholic and drug-addicted husband, Bilkis took a decisive step two years ago to change the course of her life.

Embracing the Driver’s Seat

Bilkis’s journey towards self-reliance began with a 28-day training course under a Delhi government scheme, leading to her obtaining a driving license, with all fees waived. She now works for the ETO company, starting her day with auto rickshaw number 1382, navigating through Delhi’s lanes to ferry passengers. Despite initial resistance and outright hostility from male drivers, Bilkis stood her ground, gradually earning her place and respect in the auto-rickshaw community.

Driving Towards a Brighter Future

Bilkis acknowledges the societal scepticism she faces, with many doubting a woman’s ability to drive safely. However, her determination and growing confidence have slowly changed perceptions, with passengers often lauding her driving skills. This positive feedback, coupled with the independence and financial stability her job provides, has affirmed her belief that driving an auto rickshaw was the right choice. Earning a monthly salary of Rs 15,000, Bilkis manages to cover her household expenses, including rent, her children’s education, and groceries, steering her family towards a brighter future.

Bilkis Khan’s story is not just about breaking barriers but also about the strength and determination to take control of one’s life, challenging societal norms, and inspiring other women to do the same.
