The Rare Book on Indian Classical Music from Rampur Raza Library

The Rampur Raza Library has a rare book named ‘Indian Music and Mian Tansen’ authored by Pandit Birendra Kishore Roy Choudhury. Published in 1959, this book is a treasure source of information regarding the birth and development of Indian classical music. It includes tales about renowned maestros and their musical legacies that have moulded the rich traditions of Indian classical music.

Exploring the Tansen School of Music

In the vast collection of books at Rampur Raza Library, there is a significant focus on the Tansen School of Music era. The book delves deeply into this historical period, highlighting the influential figures such as Mohammad Ali Khan, renowned for his mastery of the Rabab and his support for Rampur’s musical scene. It emphasizes the pivotal role these musical maestros played in shaping the musical landscape of their time.

Musical Lineage of Rampur Gharana

The narrative also sheds light on the great musical legacy of Rampur Gharana, a bastion of musical quality cultivated by the Pathans of Rohilkhand. It investigates the lives and works of great personalities such Sangeet Nayak Wazir Khan, the mentor of stalwarts like Baba Allauddin Khan, Mushtaque Hussain Khan, and Hafez Ali Khan. The book also emphasises the peculiar Alankaras and evocative compositions of maestros like Bahadur Hussain Khan and Amir Khan, which have engraved Rampur’s identity in the annals of Hindustani classical music.

The book is a tribute to the author’s vast knowledge and talent in music, since he was taught under the guidance of Ustad Mohammad Ali Khan of Rampur and Dabir Khan Sahib. It has been lauded by notable persons like Dr. S.N. Ratanjankar, who complimented the author’s dexterity and his scholastic light in musical composition.
