Breaking Stereotypes: The Skating Hafiz of Assam

In the quiet village of Kharupetia, Darrang district of Assam, Asadullah Farooque defies stereotypes with every glide of his roller skates. A Hafiz, one who has mastered the art of reciting the Quran, Farooque seamlessly blends his religious education with his passion for adventure sports, captivating onlookers with his agility and grace on the skating rink.

Challenging Societal Norms with Confidence

Farooque’s journey is a testament to the power of breaking free from societal expectations. As a Hafiz, many assume he would take on the role of an Imam, dedicating his life solely to religious work. However, Farooque challenges this notion, embracing his love for skating alongside his Islamic education. With a skull cap instead of a helmet and a kurta-pajama in place of a bodysuit, he stands out, inspiring others to pursue their dreams without compromise.

A Holistic Approach to Life and Faith

For Farooque, his religious education and passion for skating are not conflicting pursuits but rather complementary facets of a well-rounded life. He believes that Islam encourages personal growth in various fields, including education, culture, sports, and health. “Religious education is academic that cleanses the dirt of your mind and brain,” he says, emphasizing the spiritual upliftment it provides.

Farooque’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that embracing one’s passions and pursuing financial independence are not at odds with religious devotion. He aims to break the misconception that a Hafiz should limit themselves solely to religious work, advocating for a holistic approach to life that nurtures both spiritual and physical well-being.

As Farooque gracefully glides on the streets of Kharupetia, his story resonates with the message that true fulfillment lies in embracing the diversity of human experiences. He stands as an inspiration to those seeking to harmonize their faith with their aspirations, reminding us that breaking stereotypes can pave the way for a richer, more fulfilling life.
