Devotion and Joy: Navratri Celebrations at Maa Kamakhya Temple

In Guwahati, Assam’s capital, stands the famous Maa Kamakhya Devi Temple. This holy place sits atop Nilachal mountain, drawing countless devotees, especially during Navratri. The temple’s location adds to its spiritual aura, making the climb a part of the devotional journey.

Magic of Navratri at Kamakhya

Navratri, a nine-day festival honouring the Divine Mother, holds special significance at Kamakhya Temple. Devotees believe that worshipping here during this time brings extra blessings. As dawn breaks, crowds begin their ascent, eager to offer prayers and seek the goddess’s blessings. One devotee shared, “For the past year, we’ve been coming on foot every day from bottom to top to have darshan of Maa. During Navratri, we come to Maa’s court to do aarti, worship, and parikrama for all nine days.” This dedication shows the deep connection between the devotees and their beloved goddess.

Festival Beyond Borders

The temple comes alive with the sound of bhajans and kirtans. Devotees gather in groups, their voices joining in praise of the Mother Goddess. “We come in groups to do aarti here for nine days,” a worshipper explained. This collective expression of faith creates a powerful atmosphere of devotion and unity. Navratri’s spirit extends far beyond Kamakhya Temple. “This Navratri festival is celebrated all over India and abroad,” a devotee noted. The shared joy of honouring the Divine Mother connects people across distances, creating a global community of worshippers.

Special Energy at Kamakhya Temple

Early morning aarti holds a special place in the hearts of devotees. “Doing aarti early in the morning is considered auspicious,” shared one regular visitor. The belief is that these morning prayers carry extra power, especially during Navratri when the goddess’s presence is felt more strongly. Kamakhya Temple hosts a 15 day distinctive event. This 15-day celebration follows a special calendar based on the lunar cycle. A local explained, “It is organised from Shukla Paksha Navami to Dashami Tithi. After fifteen days, on Dashami, we perform an immersion ceremony similar to Durga Puja.”

The Kamakhya Temple’s Navratri celebration is a beautiful blend of ancient traditions and heartfelt devotion. Devotees from all walks of life come together, drawn by their faith in Maa Kamakhya. The temple grounds echo with prayers and songs, creating an atmosphere thick with spiritual energy. For many, this pilgrimage is deeply personal. One devotee shared, “We are fortunate to live on the land of the Mother Goddess. We come to see her and fulfil our wishes.” This sentiment reflects the emotional connection many feel with the deity, seeing her as a mother figure who listens to their hopes and dreams.

Each step taken is an act of devotion, preparing the mind and heart for the divine encounter at the top. The shared experience of this climb creates a sense of community among the pilgrims, united in their purpose. Inside the temple, the air is heavy with the scent of incense and flowers. Devotees wait patiently for their turn to offer prayers, their faces glowing with anticipation and reverence. Many bring special offerings – fruits, sweets, or colourful cloths – as tokens of their love for the goddess.
