Indian Army Major Radhika Sen: A Beacon of Hope and Change

In a moment of great pride for India, Major Radhika Sen of the Indian Army has been chosen to receive the prestigious UN award for her exceptional advocacy for women and girls as a peacekeeper. Announced by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, this recognition highlights her outstanding contributions in a challenging conflict zone.

Early Life and Career of Major Radhika Sen

Hailing from Himachal Pradesh, Sen’s journey is as inspiring as it is remarkable. A biotechnology engineer, she was pursuing a master’s degree at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay when she felt a calling to join the Indian Army. Her decision has since led her to extraordinary heights.

The Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award honors military peacekeepers who promote gender equality and protect women and girls from conflict-related violence. This accolade underscores the UN’s commitment to gender-related responsibilities as outlined in the 2000 Security Council resolution.

Major Sen’s Role with MONUSCO

Assigned to the Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) in 2023, Major Sen served as the Engagement Platoon Commander with the Indian Rapid Deployment Battalion. Her tenure, which concluded in April 2024, was marked by significant achievements.

Among her numerous initiatives, Sen’s educational programs stood out—English language classes for children and comprehensive training for adults empowered individuals and strengthened community bonds.

Building Trust and Solidarity

Sen’s strategies for building trust involved engaging with communities at a grassroots level. Her inclusive approach ensured that the voices of women and youth were heard, leading to more effective peacekeeping operations.

Major Radhika Sen’s dedication and achievements testify to the power of inclusive and gender-sensitive peacekeeping. Her work not only brought positive changes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo but also set a precedent for future peacekeepers.
