The Extraordinary Journey of Professor Qamar Ahsan: From Madrasa to Venerable Educationist

Born in Patna in 1952, Professor Qamar Ahsan in early years were shaped by a father who instilled in him the values of inclusivity and embracing diversity. As the son of a police officer, he spent his formative years moving from city to city, exposed to a tapestry of cultures and educational institutions, ranging from madrasas to English-medium schools.

This diverse upbringing kindled within him a thirst for knowledge that transcended boundaries, and he found solace in the written word, devouring not only his prescribed textbooks but also the works of literary giants like Premchand and Ismat Chughtai. This broad intellectual appetite would prove invaluable in his future endeavors.

Cultivating a Boundless Intellectual Curiosity

After completing his higher education at the esteemed Patna College and Patna University, Qamar Ahsan embarked on his professional journey as a college teacher at Magadh University in 1977. It was a dream realized, a passion ignited to share his experiences and insights with students while working towards improving the educational system.

His dedication and innovative approach soon propelled him to the highest echelons of academia, as he assumed the role of Vice-Chancellor at not one, but four illustrious universities: Maulana Mazharul Haq University in Patna, Ranchi University, Veer Kunwar Singh University in Arrah, and Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University in Muzaffarpur.

At each institution, Qamar Ahsan left an indelible mark, introducing new courses tailored to enhance students’ employability and fostering an environment that embraced modernity while respecting tradition. His efforts to integrate modern scientific approaches into madrasas, though not entirely successful, laid the groundwork for a more progressive and inclusive educational landscape.

In a world that often celebrates linearity, Qamar Ahsan’s journey serves as a powerful testament to the transformative potential of embracing diversity and breaking free from conventional boundaries. His legacy as an educator, administrator, and visionary will continue to inspire generations to come, reminding us that true greatness can emerge from the humblest of beginnings.
