Farooq Fayaz Bhat: A Journey Shaped by Kashmir’s Cultural Heritage

Farooq Fayaz Bhat’s ascent in life is intricately connected to his birthplace near Habbakadal, a vibrant center of theatrical activity in Kashmir. This environment significantly influenced his personality and interests. Early on, Bhat developed a deep passion for art and culture, which eventually led him to literary criticism, particularly focusing on Kashmir’s folk cultural history.

Academic and Professional Achievements

Over more than five decades, Bhat’s dedication to Kashmiri culture has been unwavering. He has been involved in theatre, Radio Kashmir (now AIR), and teaching. His notable work earned him the Sahitya Akademi award for the Kashmiri language in 2022 for “Zael Dab,” a collection of critical essays on Kashmiri literary figures. His innovative use of post-modern critical theory, neo-historicism, received significant acclaim.

In addition to the Sahitya Akademi award, Bhat received the Jammu and Kashmir State Academy of Art, Culture and Languages award in 2009 for “Kashmiri Folklore: A Study in Historical Perspective.” This book, based on his Ph.D. thesis, delves into Kashmir’s cultural history through its folklore, such as “Baande paether” (street theatre) and “Laddi Shah” (musical storytelling).

Ongoing Projects and Contributions

Bhat is currently working on the second edition of “Zael Dab” and translating Romila Thapar’s “Early India History” into Kashmiri for the National Translation Mission. He is also rewriting the history of Kashmiri literature up to the era of Habba Khatoon, a 16th-century poet.

Born on April 16, 1954, in Sathu Barbarshah, Bhat was greatly influenced by the cultural richness of his surroundings and the eminent teachers at S P College. His involvement with Radio Kashmir and the Rangmanch Dramatic Club further fueled his passion for literature and cultural history. Bhat’s extensive body of work includes publications in both Kashmiri and English, such as “Zaban Adab Te Tawareekh,” “Folklore and History of Kashmir,” and “Fazil Kashmiri.” His lifelong commitment to preserving and exploring Kashmiri culture continues to inspire and educate future generations.
