Kolkata’s Food ATM: Feeding the Hungry with Dignity

Asif Ahmed, who owns Sanjha Chulha restaurant, was upset seeing good food being thrown away. He thought about the many hungry people in Kolkata and decided to do something. Food ATM at Kolkata crossing feeds needy with 320-litre fridge of restaurant leftovers. He put a big fridge with a see-through door on the road. People could put extra food in it, and anyone needing it could take it.

This idea grew bigger when more people joined in. Groups like Kolkata We Care, Rotary, Round Table, and JITO started helping. Now, they feed about 50 people every day.

How the Food ATM Works

The Food ATM is like a bank ATM, but for food. It’s a fridge where people can put food, and others can take it if needed. It’s open from noon to 11:30 PM.

Asif and his team made sure the fridge was safe and clean. They wanted people to feel good about using it. Asif said, “No one should feel bad for needing help. Everyone deserves respect.”

Volunteers also take food to poor areas nearby. They’re thinking of working with the Kolkata Police to reach more people.

Making a Difference

The Food ATM has helped many people. Asif shared a story about a security guard who didn’t earn much. The man used the Food ATM to feed his family.

Another time, Asif saw a little girl quietly take food from the ATM. These stories show how much the Food ATM helps people.

The idea is growing. They’ve set up a Food ATM on Park Street and plan to add more. They’re also teaching school kids about not wasting food and helping others.

Asif hopes more people will start Food ATMs in other places. He says it doesn’t cost much to set up and can help many people. The Food ATM is more than just giving out food – it’s about treating everyone with kindness and respect.
