Nishat Jahan, a 36-year-old mother of two, never thought she would leave her village unaccompanied. However, due to her husband’s unemployment and the need to support her family, she took a bold step and learned the skills required for masonry work.
Like other women in her village, she began working as a farmhand, but as more women desired financial independence and skilled male workers left for cities, Nishat and others learned to lay bricks and fix them with mortar to construct walls.
Nishat Jahan’s passion for her work matches that of raising her children and looking after her family.
