Tackling the Menace: Jammu and Kashmir’s Battle Against Drug Abuse

In a concerning turn of events, Jammu and Kashmir has now surpassed Punjab in the number of individuals grappling with drug addiction. The local police force has initiated a unique approach by enlisting the support of religious leaders and influential community figures to combat this growing menace.

Recent statistics from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment reveal that approximately one million individuals in J&K are struggling with substance abuse, with a staggering 50% of them specifically addicted to opioids.

A comprehensive study conducted by the Psychiatry department at the Government Medical College in Srinagar has unveiled a startling reality. Kashmir has surged ahead of Punjab in reported drug abuse cases, currently holding the second position among the states with the highest number of drug abusers in India. Although the Northeastern region tops the list, Kashmir is not far behind.

In light of the issue’s severity, Jammu and Kashmir Police has taken proactive measures, notably by establishing centres to assist drug addicts. Additionally, in a recent development, the police in Baramulla, northern Kashmir, orchestrated a one-day Anti-Drugs Conference. Significantly, the conference garnered active participation from Imams, Moulvis, and esteemed members of civil society.

The event also attracted experts from various fields, including doctors, lawyers, social activists, police and administrative officers, and scholars. They engaged in a closed-door discussion, sharing valuable insights on the topic of religious condemnations of drug abuse.

DIG North Kashmir Vivek Gupta emphasized the pivotal role that civil societies and religious institutions play in combating the scourge of drug addiction within organizations. Highlighting the influence of religious leaders, he underlined that they are not just respected figures but also serve as “our moral compass, guiding us with unwavering devotion along the righteous path of our faith.”

As the battle against drug abuse rages on, Jammu and Kashmir are harnessing the power of community leaders and experts to confront this pressing issue head-on.
