Democracy Unveiled: India’s Stance on Democracy

Democracy, a political system dating back to the ancient Athenian era in Greece, has evolved and flourished across centuries, finding a significant abode in India. As the International Day of Democracy on September 15 approaches, it’s a moment for us in India to ponder: Are we the largest democracy in the world or the oldest? Let’s delve into this intriguing question.

Ancient Athenian Roots

In the annals of history, Athens emerged as the cradle of democracy, with Cleisthenes pioneering the concept around 508-507 BCE. His visionary approach laid the foundation for a system wherein all male citizens enjoyed equal political rights, unfettered freedom of speech, and the opportunity to participate actively in politics.

The Triad of Athenian Democracy

Athenian democracy boasted three integral institutions that shaped its governance. Firstly, the Ekklesia, a supreme governing body, held the power to legislate and influence foreign policy. Secondly, a council comprising representatives from the ten Athenian tribes ensured diverse perspectives. Lastly, the Dikasteria served as the legal courts where citizens presented their cases before a jury selected by lot. Remarkably, this democratic experiment endured for a mere two centuries.

India’s Colossal Democratic Footprint

Turning our gaze to modern times, India’s democratic landscape astounds. The sheer scale of our democracy is evident in our extensive election processes. Whether it’s the election of members to the Parliament or state legislatures, the numbers are staggering, surpassing 4,800.
