The Forgotten Hero of 1857 Freedom  Fight : Walidad Khan

In May 1857, as revolt spread across India, Walidad Khan returned to Malagarh in Bulandshahr. This distant relative of Bahadur Shah Zafar wasted no time joining local Gujar chiefs to plot against British rule. Soon, Bulandshahr became a hotbed of rebellion, though its importance in the freedom struggle is often overlooked.

A Thorn in the British Side

Walidad Khan proved to be a major headache for the British. He quickly took control of a large area, including Aligarh. His strategic position blocked the road for British reinforcements heading to Delhi. The English army officers were worried sick about Walidad’s growing power. They kept sending reports about how this “rebel Nawab” was disrupting their plans and causing havoc.

Walidad didn’t stop at Bulandshahr. His forces swept across nearby regions like Bareilly, Etawah, and Agra. He even coordinated with other famous rebels like Nana Saheb and the Jhansi Brigade. The British were so scared of him that they thought capturing Malagarh was “of vital consequence” to their rule.

The Fall of Malagarh and Walidad’s Legacy

The British threw everything they had at Walidad. They even used troops meant for capturing Delhi to fight him instead. Finally, on 1st October 1857, they managed to capture and bomb Malagarh fort. But guess what? Walidad gave them the slip!

Even though the British confiscated his property, Walidad Khan, his wife Hissea Begum, and other leaders managed to escape. They may have lost the battle, but their spirit of rebellion lived on.

Walidad Khan’s story shows us how the 1857 revolt wasn’t just about big names and famous battles. It was also about local heroes who stood against the mighty British Empire. Bulandshahr and its brave son, Walidad Khan, deserve to be remembered as important players in India’s first war of independence. Their courage and sacrifice paved the way for the freedom we enjoy today.
