Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam: India’s Vision of Global Unity and Harmony

In the entrance hall of the Indian Parliament, the profound message “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” meaning “The World is one Family,” is etched in stone. This powerful message encapsulates India’s rich heritage of diverse cultures living in harmony.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has championed this age-old wisdom as the central theme of its G-20 Presidency, infusing it with new significance on the global stage.

Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam resonates deeply with India’s cultural fabric, emphasizing that all humans, regardless of their origins, are part of one global family. It finds its roots in Chapter 6 of Maha Upanishad VI.71-73, highlighting its ancient significance in Indian cultures as a fundamental moral value.

India, a melting pot of cultures, has nurtured an environment where different faiths and beliefs coexist harmoniously. This ethos has inspired saints and thinkers to promote harmony and love nationwide. The verses of unity and love reflect the essence of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, transcending geographical boundaries.

In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, whose principles and actions embodied this vision, we find the essence of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. His philosophy of nonviolence and his commitment to holistic development exemplified the spirit of this ancient concept.

As India’s government champions Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam on the global stage, ensuring its practical application within the country is imperative. This includes addressing divisive elements that undermine the principles of unity and harmony outlined in India’s peaceful constitution.

“Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, etched in stone, embodies India’s G-20 commitment to unite humanity for a peaceful and harmonious global future.”
