Dr Ahmed Abdul Hai: A Surgeon Dedicated to Serving Bihar

At 82, Dr Ahmed Abdul Hai, a renowned surgeon from Bihar, prefers to serve the people rather than a comfortable life abroad. Born into a wealthy Muslim family in Patna on July 20, 1942, he was inspired by his father, Dr. Muhammad Abdul Hai, a doctor in the British government who later received the Padma Bhushan. From a young age, Dr Ahmed Abdul Hai exhibited a passion for learning and excelled in his studies, topping every class at the prestigious St. Xavier’s School in Patna.

A Trailblazing Surgical Career

After completing his MBBS in 1965 and postgraduate studies in general and orthopaedic surgery, Dr Hai joined Patna Medical College (PMCH) as a teacher in 1977. Over the next 25 years, he performed hundreds of risky and complicated surgeries, eventually becoming the Professor and Head of Surgery at PMCH. His expertise was sought by prominent figures, including former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar, whom he successfully treated for stomach pain.

Establishing a World-Class Hospital

Following his retirement from PMCH in 2000, Dr. Hai embarked on a new journey to establish his hospital. Heeding his grandfather’s advice, he founded the HMRI Hospital, which started with just two rooms but quickly expanded to a 40-room facility due to high patient demand. Recognizing the need for a larger facility, he constructed a 350-room hospital in Raja Bazar Samanpura with the support of his father and the then-Governor of Bihar, Dr. Akhlaqur Rahman Qadwai.

Driven by a commitment to social welfare, Dr Ahmed Abdul Hai has been actively involved in various charitable endeavours, managing madrassas and orphanages and heading the social organization Flame, which provides education to underprivileged children. His dedication to serving the people of Bihar and his unwavering pursuit of excellence in medicine have made him an inspiration to all medical practitioners.
