Saudi Arabia Embraces Yoga for Holistic Well-being

Six years ago, Saudi authorities declared yoga as ‘Halal’ (permissible for Muslims according to their religion) and introduced it in universities for both men and women. This move paved the way for the ancient Indian spiritual and physical wellness regime to gain acceptance in the Kingdom.

Integrating Yoga in the Workplace

Taking a step further, Saudi Arabia is now set to introduce yoga in offices through a collaboration between the Yoga Committee of Saudi Arabia, headed by Princess Mishael bint Faisal, and the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development. The agreement aims to promote the benefits of yoga in the community and enhance overall well-being by presenting it to improve quality of life.

Promoting Holistic Well-being

Under this agreement, employees will be encouraged to integrate yoga practices into daily routines. Workers in ministry-run care centres and shelters will be provided with tools to help them manage stress, improve focus, and enhance overall physical and mental health levels. The committee and the ministry are committed to creating harmonious and balanced workplaces that prioritize the holistic well-being of employees and the people they work with, which is in line with the goals of the Saudi Vision 2030 national development plan.

Princess Mishael bint Faisal, the vice chair of the Saudi Yoga Committee, highlighted the importance of this step, stating, “It’s a very important step for creating equal opportunities for all segments of society and investing in youth human capital, which is considered as one of the goals of Vision 2023.” She further emphasized that the collaboration would offer people the chance to participate in various sports and therapeutic yoga techniques, harnessing the benefits of sports science to serve society.

This embrace of yoga in Saudi Arabia is part of several reforms in the Kingdom, including more freedom for women and a general opening of society and the economy of the once-closed nation.
