In the Khanikar TE area, Dibrugarh a recreation of the Lord Jagannath Temple of Puri is being built. Most of the employees here were from Odisha and were followers of Lord Jagannath. Mr. J. B. Pattanayak took a significant interest in building this temple and managed money from various sources while serving as the governor of Assam.
Along with the idols of Sudarshana Chakra, Madanmohan, Sridevi, and Vishwadhatri, the temple’s inner sanctum houses their deities, known as Daru, which are carved from holy neem logs. Depending on the season, the gods are dressed differently and have different jewelry. The worship of these gods predates the temple’s construction and might have started in an old tribal shrine.
