Mushfika Hussain’s Journey into Ribbon Embroidery

Mushfika Hussain, a teacher from Assam, discovered her love for ribbon embroidery after visiting a handicrafts exhibition. She saw beautiful designs from Malaysia, Thailand, and other countries, which inspired her to start this art form at home. Mushfika learned ribbon embroidery by watching online videos and using her creativity. She began with simple designs and techniques, gradually improving her skills.

Unique Creations and Techniques

Ribbon embroidery is a 3D form of embroidery that requires more time and effort than regular embroidery. Mushfika uses high-quality fabrics, yarns, and ribbons for her work. She creates unique designs on various items like:

  • – Runners and tablecloths
  • – Cushion and sofa cover
  • – Bags and mobile pouches
  • – Dining mats and photo frames

Mushfika emphasizes that each piece is handmade and original. She follows basic techniques from the internet but adds her creative touch to make every design special. Currently, she’s working on bird designs and embroidering on grass bags.

Growing Business and Encouragement for Women

Mushfika’s products, especially bags, mobile pouches, and runners, are becoming popular in Assam. She sells her creations through:

  • – Exhibitions
  • – Friends, family, and relatives
  • – Social media pages (Facebook and Instagram)
  • – Her boutique ‘Creative Hand’ in Guwahati

The prices of her products range from Rs 400 for cushion covers to Rs 1600 for sofa covers and dining mats. Despite the low demand for handmade products in Assam, Mushfika has found success.

She encourages women to turn their hobbies into income sources. Mushfika believes that talented women can earn money from home by developing their skills. She says, “All women do not have to go outside to earn money or do a job. They can stay home and earn by honing their skills.”
