PM Modi Praises Muslim Women’s Hajj Pilgrimage, Call It ‘Huge Transformation’

In a historic moment, over 4,000 Indians Muslim women undertook the Hajj pilgrimage this year without a Mehram. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised this empowerment during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio broadcast on 30th July, 2023. The Prime Minister expressed joy at receiving letters from Muslim women about their Hajj Pilgrimage experiences this year. He praised these brave women for performing the sacred rituals without a male companion or Mehram, marking a remarkable shift in tradition.

PM Modi thanked the Saudi Arabian government for enabling the historic Hajj experience for Muslim women. In October 2022, the Saudi government changed the rule, allowing women to undertake the pilgrimage without a Mehram. Now, women worldwide can perform Hajj without a male companion.

4,314 Muslim women from India undertook the sacred journey to Mecca in Saudi Arabia between June 26 and July 1, 2023. The Saudi authorities appointed women coordinators exclusively for these women pilgrims to ensure their comfort and safety.
