Raisen’s 200-Year-Old Tradition of Firing Cannons to Signal Iftar and Sehri During Ramazan

In the city of Raisen, Madhya Pradesh, Muslims living in the city and surrounding villages can hear a boom close to sunset and see the sky lit up during Ramazan. This is due to a cannonball being fired from a hilltop, located approximately 45 km from the capital Bhopal, to signal the start of Iftar and Sehri.

This tradition has been kept alive for 200 years as a testament to India’s love for tradition and cultural diversity. This practice was once thought to be a tradition in the Arab world when there were no watches or clocks, and countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Dubai have their own stories about firing cannons during Ramazan.
