Begum Hijab Imtiaz Ali: Pioneer Muslim Aviator and Literary Icon

Delving into the annals of history, one encounters the remarkable name of Begum Hijab Ali, a trailblazing figure of the 20th century. In the pages of ‘The International Women’s News’ from 1939, Begum Hijab Imtiaz Ali emerges as a pioneering Muslim woman who achieved a significant milestone – she became the first Muslim female in the British Empire to obtain an ‘A’ license as a pilot.

While her aviation feat is a testament to her trailblazing spirit, Begum Hijab was also celebrated in Urdu literature. She etched her name in the literary world at the tender age of 12 with her romance masterpiece, “Meri Na-kaam Mohabbat” (My Failed Love). Beyond her acclaimed novels, she served as the editor of “Tehzeeb-e-Niswan,” a monthly Urdu magazine for women.

In “Pagal Khana,” Begum Hijab warned of technology’s dangers, foreseeing nuclear conflict, highlighting her insightful concerns.

She intertwined her personal life with literary and feminist legacies by marrying Imtiaz Ali Taj. He was the son of early feminists Muhammadi Begum and Syed Mumtaz Ali, renowned for “Anarkali.”

Begum Hijab Imtiaz Ali’s most significant achievement was becoming the first Indian Muslim woman to obtain a pilot’s license within the British Empire. Her accomplishments placed her among the esteemed company of other trailblazing female aviators from India, such as Sally Tata, Rodabeh Tata (sisters of industrialist and philanthropist JRD Tata), and Urmila Parikh. All these women left an enduring legacy in the annals of aviation history.
