The Importance of Work in Islam

In Islam, all types of work are seen as equal, which helps reduce class differences. The law mandates that everyone gives their best in what they is doing. Lack of work or futility is seen as a sin and one wastes time on other unfruitful activities when he has no faith. In other words, every man or woman who is fit to work with his body and his brain must seek to find employment.

Work as a Ways of Offering Worship and Faith

Wealth in Islam is a tool to help people reach their goals, not the ultimate goal itself. Beneficial wealth is therefore gained from productive and beneficial labor while there are occupations prohibited under Sharia law. Everything belongs to God and people as well as society must fully utilize all resources available. Wealth is important for personal satisfaction, and poverty is not desired in Islam.

Work is very important in Islam. From an economic view it is not only a source of income but it is also a form of devotion. Islam values hard work and ethical behavior from both employers and employees.

The Value of Wealth and Ethical Earning

When work is done sincerely and ethically then it becomes worship of Allah (ibadah). The Islamic holy book, the Qur’an, and the prophetic examples of the Prophet Muhammad always emphasise proper and legal income. The scripture of the Muslims, the Qur’an has it, “And say: work; so that Allah may see your work and so may His Messenger and those of the believers… (Qur’an, 9:105). It is clear evidently that people are supposed to be responsible for their work and should be responsive.

Islam respects all lawful work, no matter what it is. Here, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also said, “No people have eaten any food better than what has been got through their labour.” (Sahih Bukhari). This is a good lesson about independence and the virtue of working for the earnings.
