Kala Ramachandran, the woman police commissioner of Gurgaon

Kala Ramachandran, a 1994 batch IPS officer, has recently been appointed as the woman police commissioner of Gurgaon. Before this, she worked as Principal Secretary, Transport Department, Government of Haryana and ADGP, State Vigilance Bureau (H). She is the first woman police commissioner of the district after Gurgaon formed the commissioner structure in 2007.

Kala Ramachandran said that after taking charge, she would talk to police officers working at the ground level to better understand the significant challenges and problems they face and formalize measures to tackle crime. They will primarily work on traffic management, ensuring the safety of the city’s residents and promoting the right environment for doing business apart from basic policing.

Kala says to the media, “I will be able to tell you about the detailed plan only after joining duty and meeting my team, but strengthening the basic policing system is my first and obvious goal. As a policeman, I will ensure that our entire force works towards making the city safe and providing security to the town’s residents. Apart from traffic management and road safety, she said that we would also focus on protecting citizens from road crimes, including hooliganism, eve-teasing, and drunk driving. She further said that the police would work on priority to curb women’s safety, child protection, economic crimes, and cyber-crimes.

Kala Ramachandran has previously served as Superintendent of Police in the Rewari, Fatehabad, and Panchkula districts. She was also on Central Deputation to the Intelligence Bureau from 2001 to 2017 and served as the North Eastern Police Academy chief of Meghalaya from 2017 to 2020. In August 2020, Kala returned to her home cadre. She served as Senior Secretary Transport Department, with the rank of Additional Director General of Police, Crime Against Women Cell and Vigilance at Police Headquarters, Haryana.
