Kartiki Gonsalves, the director of the Oscar-winning documentary short film The Elephant Whisperers, revealed in an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times that the “extremely unusual family dynamic” between a man, a woman and a young elephant drew her to do the project.
The documentary captures the sacred bond between man and nature, showcasing the relationship between the three subjects. With a background in documentary photography and cinematography, Gonsalves worked hard to make the production team almost invisible to the subjects, allowing them to feel comfortable and natural in front of the camera. Her efforts paid off, as the film won an Oscar for Best Documentary Short.
