Dr. Hashima Hasan: NASA Scientist Hailing from Lucknow and Fueled by USSR’s Satellite Inspiration

In the annals of history, October 4, 1957, marked a pivotal moment when the USSR embarked on the momentous mission of launching its inaugural satellite into the boundless cosmos. Dr. Hashima Hasan, Deputy Project Scientist of the James Webb Space Telescope, unveils unprecedented images of distant exo-stars and galaxies. As the world looked up to the heavens with bated breath, a family in the quaint city of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, gathered in the serene confines of their backyard, their eyes glued to the flickering black and white images on their television set.

Fast forward to December 2022, and that very same young girl had evolved into one of the brilliant minds associated with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the esteemed space agency of the United States. 

A Glimpse into the Past

One of the most remarkable revelations brought to light by the James Webb Space Telescope was the initial four images depicting the undulating landscapes of distant galaxies. Released by NASA in December 2022, these visuals transported humanity 13 billion years into the past.

Hashima Hasan, born in the vibrant city of Lucknow, has played a pivotal role in expanding the frontiers of human understanding in astrophysics. She also holds the crucial position of Education and Public Outreach Lead for Astrophysics at NASA.
