Nahdlatul Ulama: Preserving Indonesia’s Pluralistic Islam Against ISIS Threat”

In response to the rising threat of ISIS and its violent ideology, Indonesia’s prominent Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), took decisive action in the mid-nineties. Recognizing the need to safeguard the nation’s youth from terrorist allure, NU, boasting an estimated 52 to 95 million members, convened a crucial assembly.

Embracing Indonesia’s unique brand of Islam, which promotes acceptance of other faiths, cultural diversity, and rejects the concept of a Caliphate, NU introduced “Islam Nusantara” or “Islam of the Archipelago.”

This doctrine presented a powerful counter-narrative to ISIS’ rigid and extremist ideology. Nahdlatul Ulama’s 33rd national conference in August 2015 centered around this transformative concept.
