Mohammed Siraj’s Heartfelt Gesture: Dedicates ‘Player of the Final’ Prize to Ground Staff

Mohammed Siraj, affectionately known as ‘Miyan Magic’ by his fans, showcased his cricketing prowess and heartwarming sportsmanship during the Asia Cup. After the final match at the R Premadasa Stadium, Siraj dedicated his ‘Player of the Final’ cash prize to the dedicated ground staff for their relentless efforts.

Siraj’s gesture of allocating the $5,000 (approximately Rs 41.5 lakh) prize money to the ground staff resonated deeply with cricket enthusiasts worldwide. These unsung heroes toiled tirelessly to ensure that several matches, including the final, proceeded despite intermittent interruptions caused by rain.

“This cash prize goes to the groundsmen. This tournament wouldn’t have been possible without them,” Mohammed Siraj declared with humility and gratitude.

Notably, Mohammed Siraj’s on-field performance was nothing short of exceptional. His fierce bowling was pivotal in dismantling Sri Lanka’s innings, restricting them to a mere 50 runs in approximately 15 overs. The talented bowler scalped an impressive six wickets in just seven overs, earning accolades from cricket enthusiasts.

Reflecting on his outstanding performance, Siraj commented, “No biryani here. I have been bowling well for a long time, missing the edges earlier. But I found them today. The wicket was seaming earlier, but there was swing today. I thought that I would bowl fuller because of the swing. When there’s good bonding between fast bowlers, it’s helpful for the team… My best spell.”

In recognition of the commendable efforts of curators and ground staff in Colombo and Kandy, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), we announced a well-deserved prize money pool of $50,000. This gesture acknowledged the unwavering dedication of the ground staff in facilitating matches despite the challenges posed by inclement weather.

ACC president Jay Shah expressed his gratitude to the ground staff via social media, commending their relentless commitment throughout the tournament. Mohammed Siraj’s compassionate gesture and stellar performance on the field exemplify the spirit of cricket that extends beyond boundaries and celebrates the unsung heroes behind the scenes.
