Historic Passage Of Women’s Reservation Bill

In a historic move, the Lok Sabha, India’s lower House of Parliament, passed the Women’s Reservation Bill, officially known as the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023. This groundbreaking legislation mandates 33 percent reservation for women in both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

The bill, a crucial step towards gender equality in Indian politics, received overwhelming support in the Lok Sabha. Out of the 456 members who voted on the motion for its passage, an astounding 454 members voted in favour, with just two members opposing it.

This momentous achievement marks the first bill passed in the Lok Sabha since its relocation to the new Parliament building. The bill’s approval required a majority of the total membership of the House and a majority of not less than two-thirds of the members “present and voting.”
