Challenges Confronting Padma Shri Awardee Akhone Asghar Ali Basharat, the Lone Balti Writer

When Akhone Asghar Ali Basharat, the lone Padma Shri Balti writer from Ladakh’s Kargil district, received India’s prestigious honor in 2022, hopes were high for his literary career. However, a year later, he grapples with challenges in publishing his latest anthology of native poetry.

A Cry for Subsidy

Speaking from his home in Kharkiv Tchoo village, Basharat reveals his struggle to publish a substantial collection of poems in the Balti language. The anthology aims to shed light on the diverse facets of the language and culture separated by the Line of Control between India and Pakistan. Basharat seeks financial support or subsidy for his ambitious project.

The Cultural Tapestry

Balti, spoken in Gilgit-Baltistan and Kargil, is a cultural bridge across borders. Basharat’s work not only delves into Kargil’s history, geography, and culture but also addresses untold stories during the Dogra rule and post-Independence issues. The 320-page book serves as a comprehensive account of the challenges faced by Balti-speaking people.

Triumphs Amidst Struggles

Despite lacking formal education, Basharat, at 72, boasts an impressive literary journey. Inspired by his father, he learned multiple languages and published his first anthology in the early ’80s. His contribution to preserving Balti culture earned him the admiration of local poets and communities.

The Lingering Threat

Basharat expresses concerns about the potential extinction of the Balti language in Kargil. With declining speakers, he advocates preserving language and culture through literature, seminars, and cultural programs.

Legacy of Inspiration

Reflecting on his father’s influence, Basharat sees writing as an inherent part of his DNA. The fear of cultural erosion drives him to continue his literary pursuits, emphasizing the vital role of platforms like AIR Kargil in nurturing talents from remote areas.

In the face of adversity, Basharat’s struggle brings attention to the importance of preserving the region’s linguistic diversity and cultural heritage.
