Defying Stereotypes and Leading with Valor

If the all-women tri-services contingent in the Republic Day Parade seemed like a mere display, the stories of two remarkable women in the Indian Army, Captain Saria Abbasi and Captain Fatima Wasim, illuminate the profound strides women are making in the military. Beyond the parade, these women not only join the armed forces but also take on the most challenging assignments, serving on treacherous terrains and hostile borders and Defying Stereotypes.

Captain Saria Abbasi: Redefining Boundaries on the Line of Actual Control

Captain Saria Abbasi, stationed on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China, is a trailblazing figure. Renowned for her anti-aircraft expertise at the Tawang border, she showcases women’s leadership in strategic deployments, emphasizing their pivotal roles in handling India’s latest acquisition, the L70 anti-aircraft gun.

Captain Fatima Wasim: Making History at the Siachen Glacier

Captain Fatima Wasim makes history as the first woman medical officer deployed on the Siachen Glacier, the world’s highest and coldest battlefield. Recognized by the Indian Army’s Fire and Fury Corps, her triumph at an altitude of 15,200 feet showcases her indomitable spirit, highlighted through a shared video of her rigorous training at the Siachen Battle School.

Continuation of Excellence: Captain Geetika Koul’s Siachen Endeavor

Captain Geetika Koul, part of the Snow Leopard Brigade, adds to the narrative of women achieving milestones. She recently achieved the distinction of being the first woman medical officer deployed at Siachen after completing intensive training at Siachen Battle School. The Siachen Glacier, the highest-altitude battle site globally, near the Indo-Pak Line of Control, represents Earth’s apex battleground as the largest glacier in India and the second-largest worldwide.

Captain Saria Abbasi’s journey, shifting from a Genetic Engineering graduate to a military leader, began four years ago. Rejecting job offers from corporate giants, she focused on clearing the Combined Defence Service (CDS) competitive examination, ultimately joining the Military.
