Unity Beyond Faith: The Inspiring Iftar Tradition at Sufidar Temple

Among many Iftars organised by non-Muslims during Ramzan, the one organised by the Sufidar temple in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is remarkable. For 40 years, volunteers from both Hindu and Muslim communities have come together to prepare meals for 1200 people, delivering them to a mosque and serving fasting Muslims with dedication.

A Story of Harmony

The Sufidar temple, located in Mylapore, was constructed to spread the teachings of Shehanshah Baba Nebhraj, a Sufi saint from Sindh, by a Hindu individual. Today, it’s known as a symbol of religious harmony, adorned with paintings of Sufi saints, Hindu saints, Jesus Christ, Mother Mary, Guru Nanak, and other spiritual figures.

The founder, Dada Ratanchand, initiated Iftar gatherings during Ramadan, continuing even after his passing. Originating from Pakistan, he settled in Chennai post-partition, dedicating himself to spirituality and eventually building a temple that fostered unity among diverse faiths.

A Heartwarming Service

The temple prepares vegetarian meals daily, including fried rice, biryani, pickles, saffron milk, and fruits for the fasting Muslims at Wallajah Masjid. Volunteers, including Hindus covering their heads with Muslim caps, deliver these meals daily, embodying respect and sensitivity towards Islam.

Prince Nawab Abdul Ali of Arcot praised this tradition, highlighting its continuity and dedication to communal harmony. In a nation like India, he emphasised the importance of respecting all religions and treating each other as brothers and sisters.

Embracing Diversity

Jamila, a regular at the mosque, expressed her gratitude, stating that this tradition not only provides sustenance but also fosters a sense of unity and respect among communities.

In conclusion, the Iftar tradition at Sufidar Temple is a shining example of how people from diverse backgrounds can come together in the spirit of unity, respect, and shared humanity.
