Shivani Singh: A Triumph with Seviyan in a Musical Family

Shivani Singh, a Delhi-based Ghazal singer, has earned praise for her Seviyan, a traditional Eid sweet, from her husband’s discerning grandmother. This is a remarkable feat in their family of accomplished Muslim musicians from Rampur, Uttar Pradesh.

Unity in Diversity: A Culinary Symphony

Shivani, alongside her Christian mother-in-law, Roma Abbas Khan, and Muslim husband, Ghulam Hasan Khan, showcases exemplary unity in the kitchen, harmoniously preparing and presenting a variety of delectable dishes for Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations.

This unique family not only cherishes their musical heritage but also embraces diverse cultural celebrations, including Eid-ul-Fitr, Holi, Diwali, Christmas, and Karva Chauth. Their dedication to daily riyaz not only enriches their own lives but also brings joy to their neighbors with morning melodies and festive treats during Eid.

Over the years, Shivani has perfected the art of Making Seviyan, a creamy dessert infused with vermicelli, milk, nuts, and saffron, earning accolades from her family and guests alike. Her husband, Ghulam Hasan, a Khayal Gayaki exponent from Rampur Sahaswan Gharana, admires her culinary skills, a sentiment echoed by their relatives.

Traditions and Tastes: A Vibrant Blend

Shivani’s journey into the culinary world began with observing her mother-in-law’s Eid preparations, gradually immersing herself in the family’s rich gastronomic traditions. The family eagerly anticipates Eid-al-Fitr, a time of feasting and festivity, symbolizing the end of Ramadan’s fasting period and emphasising spiritual renewal.

Ghulam Hasan, amidst his Ramadan performances and familial responsibilities, eagerly anticipates the Eid festivities, especially his mother’s renowned Korma, a dish cherished by their guests. Roma, with her musical background from Rampur Sahaswan Gharana, finds joy in preparing traditional dishes like Chicken Korma, a favorite among the younger members of the family.

Their Eid celebrations encompass both traditional rituals like ‘Sunnat’ and modern practices, such as digital Eidi transactions, reflecting a harmonious blend of heritage and contemporary living.
