Indian Expats in Dubai: Finding Joy in Creating a Grand Iftar Feast During Ramadan

A group of Indian expats in Dubai find comfort and meaning in their nightly routine of making a magnificent Iftar feast despite the long days and challenging jobs. In the holy month of Ramadan, these people forego the choice to relax at home and instead contribute to a large gathering in the Naif district of Dubai, UAE.

Revitalising Through Service

A long-time volunteer with Dubai’s CDA, Suresh Kumar Marimato, personifies this attitude. After a long day at the logistics firm, he takes charge of a team of mechanics, but he always has time to volunteer at the Iman Cultural Centre. Suresh reveals, “The fatigue dissipates once I start serving at the Grand Iftar in Deira,” demonstrating how selfless service can revitalise one.

The multicultural fabric of Dubai is on full display at the Iman Cultural Centre, which has grown from a small gathering to a thriving event that hosts hundreds of people every day. Local businesses, including those whose owners temporarily shut their doors to host the event, and more than a hundred volunteers work together under the patronage of Ali Rashid Lotta. This coming together of efforts encapsulates the spirit of communal hospitality and togetherness.

Exploring Dubai’s Cultural Mosaic

For newcomers like Vignesh Manoharan, Dubai’s Iftar custom gives a glimpse into the city’s unique cultural tapestry. “I sought ways to contribute during Ramadan, and I found my calling here,” comments Vignesh, echoing the views of many volunteers who enthusiastically and determinedly perform duties ranging from cooking to cleaning. Their collaborative effort guarantees that every visitor departs while breaking their fast, promoting a feeling of shared humanity and compassion.

The piece emphasises the devotion, solidarity, and cultural diversity woven into Dubai’s Iftar tradition, highlighting the profound influence of volunteers and social peace throughout Ramadan.
