Dr. Mustafa A. Barbhuiya: A Journey from Assam to Global Recognition in Pathology

Dr. Mustafa A. Barbhuiya comes from a small village in Hailakandi district, southern Assam. He has been named one of the top 100 most influential people in Pathology and one of the Top 20 Heroes of Pathology in the US for 2024. His journey was not easy. He completed his early schooling at Sanuhar Ali Memorial High School in a village that had no electricity or proper roads. In the early nineties, he cycled on muddy paths to attend Advanced Mathematics and Science classes in Hailakandi town. Later, he went to Gurucharan College in Silchar for his 12th grade and Bachelor of Science, majoring in Zoology.

Higher Studies and Mentorship

Dr. Barbhuiya continued his education at Jiwaji University in Gwalior, where he earned his Master’s and PhD in Biochemistry. This education helped him become a Clinical Biochemist and Molecular Biologist. He credits two teachers for his success: Prof. Baby Singha, who taught him Parasitology, and the late Prof. Meenu Rai, who introduced him to Clinical Biochemistry. His PhD guide, Prof. Pramod K. Tiwari, also played a significant role in shaping his career in molecular biology.

Career Achievements

After completing his PhD in July 2013, Dr. Barbhuiya went to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in the USA for advanced training. He aimed to return to India to set up his own laboratory in Assam. However, due to job challenges in India, he continued his career in the US. He completed a clinical chemistry fellowship at Penn State College of Medicine and became a practising clinical biochemist and laboratory director. Currently, he is the section medical director at Baystate Health Pathology services in Western Massachusetts. In this role, he provides important clinical consultations to doctors and healthcare providers about laboratory test results. Dr. Barbhuiya’s story is an inspiring example of hard work and dedication leading to global recognition.
