Understanding Dhanteras and Dhanvantari

Dhanvantari is known as the god of medicine and health in Indian culture. He is also the founder of Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine. Dhanvantari’s story comes from old Hindu texts called Puranas. He is considered an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. According to the famous tale of ‘Samudra Manthan’ or the churning of the ocean, Dhanvantari played a key role. During this event, the gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras) churned the ocean of milk to find the nectar of immortality, known as Amrit. Dhanvantari emerged from the ocean holding a pot of Amrit, which symbolises health and longevity. He also carried medicinal herbs, showing his connection to healing. This is why Dhanteras celebrates his arrival, bringing blessings of health and wealth.

The Significance of Dhanteras

Dhanteras is celebrated on the thirteenth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Kartika. On this day, people buy gold, silver, and other metals, believing that these purchases will bring prosperity and protect them from negative energy. While this tradition continues, Dhanteras has also become a time to focus on health. Many families now schedule health check-ups, Ayurvedic consultations, and practice yoga and meditation. This shift reflects Dhanvantari’s teachings about the importance of health and well-being.

Celebrating Dhanteras

The rituals of Dhanteras vary across India but share common themes of devotion and gratitude. The day often starts with cleaning and decorating homes. People light oil lamps at their entrances to welcome Dhanvantari’s blessings. In temples dedicated to Dhanvantari, like the one in Tamil Nadu, devotees gather to pray for good health. Special pujas (worship rituals) are performed to invite his healing energy. Families chant mantras and offer flowers to Dhanvantari’s idol or picture in their prayer rooms. Overall, Dhanteras is a time to celebrate health, wealth, and the teachings of Dhanvantari.
