Symbol-Based Nutrition Labels for Packaged Foods Considered by FSSAI

FSSAI considers Front of Pack Labelling for packaged foods in India based on recognizable symbols indicating nutritional value such as energy, saturated fat, sugar, sodium, and essential nutrients per 100 gm/ml. The Indian Nutrition Rating has been proposed, with comments under consideration.

Nutritional labeling has already been implemented in the West, found to be effective in helping consumers make informed choices. The National Institute of Nutrition conducted a study indicating that summary labels provide a brief overview of a product’s key features and benefits, while warning labels can deter consumption of even moderately unhealthy foods.
