Savitribai Phule and Fatima Sheikh: Revolutionary Women in Education

Savitribai Phule and Fatima Sheikh were revolutionary women in education and social reform. In the 19th century, Savitribai and her husband, Jyotiba Phule, realized the importance of education for women and backward castes in India, where no system of education existed for them.

Savitribai Phule and Fatima Sheikh opened a school for girls, but the problem was the lack of woman teachers. Savitribai took the responsibility and joined a teacher training course from Missionary College.

She learned to read and write Marathi and English, passing her school examinations. Though not much information is available about Fatima Sheikh, her contributions can be seen through the letters Savitribai wrote to her.
