Gender Differences in Asthma: Insights from Medical Expert

Asthma, a chronic respiratory condition characterized by airway inflammation and constriction, affects individuals of both genders. However, research has revealed intriguing gender disparities in its prevalence and manifestation. Dr. Vikram Vora, Medical Director for the Indian Subcontinent at International SOS, discussed this topic in an interview with HT Lifestyle.

He explained that scientific literature indicates a higher incidence of asthma in males during early life, while females experience an increased risk post-puberty. This disparity is attributed to various factors, including female sex hormones hindering mucous clearance and differences in lung tissue and airway growth.

Additionally, age, obesity, allergies, and environmental exposures contribute to adult asthma. Dr. Vora also highlighted the workplace as a potential trigger for asthma attacks or exacerbation of symptoms.
