Nishat un Nisa Begum: A Remarkable Woman in India’s Freedom Struggle

Nishat un Nisa Begum, a prominent figure in India’s freedom movement, has long been overshadowed by her husband Maulana Hasrat Mohani, who coined the iconic slogan “Inquilab Zindabad” (Long live revolution). Historians have often marginalized Nishat, relegating her to a supporting role in the historical narrative where her husband took center stage.

However, Hasrat himself acknowledged that he would have remained an apolitical editor if not for his marriage to Nishat. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad hailed her as a symbol of unwavering determination and patience, while Mahatma Gandhi recognized her significant contribution to the Non-Cooperation Movement.

Nishat un Nisa Begum was far from a dependent woman who owed her existence solely to her husband.
