Reservation Struggles: Divisions within Indian Muslims

In the early months of India’s independence, Dalit Muslims were granted reservations under Article 341 of the Constitution. However, on August 10, 1950, the President revoked their disadvantaged community status, leading to significant repercussions. This decision impacted a large number of Indian Muslims and deepened divisions within the community.

Allegedly, the move was influenced by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, then the education minister, as claimed by Shamim Ansari, President of the Uttar Pradesh unit of the All Indian Pasmanda Muslim Mahaj.

Pasmanda Muslims, feeling marginalized by the dominant “Ashraf” Muslims, accuse them of perpetuating political manipulation and systemic discrimination.
