Buddha Jama Masjid Hostel Provides a Home for Bright Students from Poor Families in Guwahati

Buddha Jama Masjid is a famous mosque in the Ambari area of Guwahati, Assam. Besides its religious significance, the mosque has been actively involved in social welfare activities for the past few years. One of its noteworthy initiatives is the hostel it runs for bright students from low-income families who come to Guwahati to pursue higher education. In this article, we will explore the hostel’s operations and the benefits it provides to these students.

Background:

Guwahati, the largest city in Assam, is a hub for higher education in the Northeast region of India. Students from remote villages and towns come to Guwahati to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various fields. However, the city is expensive, and renting a room or a hostel can be challenging for students from low-income families. Most of these students end up living in unhygienic conditions or dropping out of college due to financial difficulties.

Establishment of the Hostel:

To address this issue, Buddha Jama Masjid, in collaboration with local NGOs and philanthropists, established a hostel for such students in 2017. The hostel can accommodate up to 50 boys and girls students at a time. It provides free accommodation, food, and study materials to the selected students. The hostel has a warden who looks after the students’ day-to-day needs and ensures their safety and well-being.

Selection Process:

The hostel’s selection process is transparent and merit-based. The students who apply for the hostel must have excellent academic records and come from low-income families. The hostel management team verifies the students’ financial status by conducting background checks and interviews with their families. The selected students are then provided with a hostel room and amenities like beds, study tables, chairs, and wardrobes.

Facilities:

The hostel has basic amenities such as clean drinking water, sanitation facilities, and electricity backup. It also has a standard room where students can interact with each other and engage in recreational activities such as reading books, playing games, or watching TV. The hostel provides three meals a day, cooked in-house by the staff. The menu is nutritious and caters to students’ dietary requirements.

Impact:

The hostel has significantly impacted the lives of the selected students. It has provided them with a safe and hygienic living environment, which has improved their overall health and well-being. It has also reduced their financial burden, enabling them to focus on their studies without worrying about accommodation and food expenses. Many students who have stayed in the hostel have excelled academically and secured good jobs after completing their courses.

Future Plans:

The hostel management team plans to expand the hostel’s capacity to accommodate more students in the future. They also want to collaborate with more local NGOs and philanthropists to raise funds for the hostel’s maintenance and expansion. Additionally, they plan to provide skill development training and career counseling to the selected students to enhance their employability.

Conclusion:

The Buddha Jama Masjid hostel is a shining example of how religious institutions can contribute to social welfare activities. The hostel’s operations have improved the lives of many bright students from low-income families who otherwise would have dropped out of college due to financial difficulties. The hostel provides a safe and hygienic living environment, which enables students to focus on their studies and achieve their goals. It is a step towards building an inclusive and equitable society where every student can access quality education.
