Mahila Panchayat’s Transformative Impact in Shaheen Bagh

Mahila Panchayat and the Social Pride Welfare Society go beyond legal and educational support.

Naseema, a West Bengal native working as a housemaid in Southeast Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh, found herself trapped in an abusive marriage. Her husband’s substance abuse and violence created a dire situation at home. The Mahila Panchayat, a dedicated group of volunteers, stepped in to bring about positive change.

Legal Intervention for a New Beginning

Despite attempts at persuasion, Naseema’s husband remained resistant to change. The Mahila Panchayat, recognizing the severity of the situation, sought legal help. While her husband still battles with substance abuse, the violence has ceased, allowing Naseema and her children to live in a more secure environment.

Financial Support for Stability

Mahila Panchayat not only addresses cases of domestic violence but also extends financial aid to women like Naseema facing economic challenges. This support has impacted the lives of approximately 3,000 women, granting them peace and dignity.

A Network Under Social Pride Welfare Society

Working under the Social Pride Welfare Society of Shaheen Bagh and supported by the Delhi Government, Mahila Panchayat is a vital resource for women in distress.

Tackling Domestic Violence: Counseling and Legal Aid

Firdous Begum, a member of Mahila Panchayat, notes that most cases they handle involve domestic violence. The group has successfully addressed over 3,000 cases, utilizing counseling and, when necessary, involving the police.

Empowering Through Education and Training

Dr. Kamal Ahmed, President of the Social Pride Welfare Society, emphasizes the need for empowerment. The society conducts self-defense training for women and runs a skill training center, benefitting over 300 women in areas like tailoring and henna application.

Healthcare Initiatives and Medical Camps

The Society organizes medical camps, providing free healthcare to over 40,000 patients in Delhi NCR. These camps reach impoverished areas, including those inhabited by Nepalis and Rohingya refugees.

Education for the Marginalized

Recognizing the importance of education, the society guides children from marginalized communities, such as garbage pickers and Rohingyas, towards government schools.

Holistic Support: Food, Clothing, and Ration Kits

Mahila Panchayat and the Social Pride Welfare Society go beyond legal and educational support. They distribute ration kits to over 4,000 families, provide clothing, and organize food distribution during Ramadan.

Humanitarian Aid During Crisis

During the Covid-19 pandemic and the Yamuna floods of 2023, the Society actively supported affected communities, distributing food, blankets, and warm clothes.
