Professor Shabina Nishat Omar: A Lifelong Scholar Empowering Women Through Education 

Born into a family that valued education and progressive thinking, Professor Shabina Nishat Omar’s journey began with a love for reading cultivated during her childhood. As the eldest and only daughter of highly educated parents – a renowned medical practitioner father and a mother holding a doctorate in Urdu – she was nurtured in an environment that struck a fine balance between affection and discipline. Her earliest mentor, best friend, and playmate was her mother, who instilled in her a thirst for knowledge from a young age. 

 Academic Excellence and a Passion for Teaching 

Professor Omar’s academic prowess was evident from an early age, as she excelled in her studies at Pratt Memorial School, earning a double promotion and skipping a grade due to her exceptional performance. Her natural ability to articulate, express herself fluently, and analyze concepts paved the way for a career in academics, where she could leverage her strengths to inspire others. 

 A Trailblazer in Education and Women’s Empowerment 

With nearly 25 years of teaching experience in English Language and Literature, Professor Omar has left an indelible mark on the field of education. Currently serving as an Officer on Special Duty at the Education Directorate, Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal, she is also the Professor and Head of the English Department at Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College, affiliated with the University of Calcutta.  

 A Changemaker Empowering Women Through Education 

Beyond her academic pursuits, Professor Omar is a changemaker who believes in being the change she wants to see. She mentors women across all levels of society, empowering them through her myriad initiatives and philanthropic efforts.  

As the State President of the West Bengal Higher Education Council, Professor Shabina Nishat Omar continues to inspire and guide generations of students, embodying the spirit of a lifelong scholar committed to creating a more equitable and empowered society through the transformative power of education.
