The Importance of Ayurveda: Insights from Dr. Muhammad Shamim Akhtar

Dr. Muhammad Shamim Akhtar, a prominent Ayurvedic practitioner from Bihar, believes that Ayurveda, India’s ancient healthcare system, was largely ignored during British rule. He argues that while allopathic medicine received support, research in Ayurveda was halted. Dr. Akhtar, along with his wife, Dr. Tabasim Jahan, runs the Majhaulia Healthcare Center in West Champaran, where they promote awareness of Ayurveda. He emphasises that if Ayurveda had received the same attention as modern medicine, it could have become a leading healthcare system worldwide.

Benefits of Ayurvedic Medicine

Dr. Akhtar highlights the advantages of Ayurvedic treatments, stating that they are derived from natural resources like herbs and plants, making them non-toxic with minimal side effects. He points out that Ayurveda was the most popular healthcare choice in India until the 18th century, as it not only treats diseases but also strengthens the immune system. He references Acharya Charak, a key figure in Ayurveda, who documented various surgical techniques, including organ transplants, long before modern medicine. Dr. Akhtar believes that the neglect of Ayurveda has hindered its development, despite its rich history and potential.

Resurgence of Interest in Ayurveda

Despite historical challenges, Dr. Akhtar notes a growing interest in Ayurveda today. He observes that both central and state governments are working to promote Ayurvedic practices, leading to an increase in the establishment of medicine manufacturing units. He believes that more efforts are needed to revive Ayurveda fully. At the Majhaulia Healthcare Center, Dr. Akhtar and his team provide affordable treatments for chronic conditions like diabetes, asthma, and joint pain. He is encouraged by the positive response from patients who seek Ayurvedic care, finding relief from their ailments without side effects. Dr. Akhtar remains hopeful that Ayurveda will continue to thrive and serve humanity effectively.
