Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, which hold up the faith and way of life for Muslims. It is a fundamental act of worship that Allah Almighty has prescribed for us to observe without question.
The Quran states that fasting was also prescribed to those before us so that we may learn taqwa, or the Fear of the Almighty.
Fasting gives us a proper perspective on our lives as we abstain from food and drink from dawn until dusk. It reminds us of our dependence on Allah and reinforces that we are nothing without Him. In prayer, we humble ourselves before Allah, recognizing our own powerlessness and seeking His guidance and mercy.
