Assam Government Bans Single-Use Plastic And Small PET Water Bottles

Under Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, the Assam government has prioritized environmental conservation, flood management, and welfare. A recent cabinet meeting in Guwahati banned Single-Use Plastic and PET bottles less than 1 litre from October 2 this year. A ban on PET bottles of less than 2 litres will follow next year to encourage eco-friendly alternatives.

Assam’s cabinet approved Phase I of the ‘Climate Resilient Brahmaputra Integrated Flood and Riverbank Erosion Risk Management Project.’ Aided by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and costing Rs 2097 crore, it aims to tackle flood and riverbank erosion in vulnerable districts like Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Morigaon, Kamrup, and Goalpara. It involves anti-erosion and embankment works spanning 72.7 km and 3.27 km, respectively.

The government also prioritized energy efficiency and cost reduction for low-income households. Under the scheme ‘Mukhyamantrir Dakshya Pohar soni/Mukhyamantrir Sanchay Pohar Asoni,’ around 50 lakh low-end households will receive four 9-watt LED bulbs at no cost. This move, to an estimated expenditure of Rs 130 crore, aims to decrease energy consumption, reduce bills, and manage electricity load during peak hours.
