Vikram Lander’s Successful Lunar Hop Marks Milestone for ISRO

In a groundbreaking development sure to captivate science enthusiasts worldwide, the Vikram Lander, currently stationed on the moon’s enigmatic south pole, has triumphantly executed a hop experiment. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has confirmed that Vikram, propelled by its engines, gracefully ascended approximately 40 centimeters from its lunar base and safely landed a short distance away on a Sunday.

ISRO expressed its elation, asserting that Vikram Lander had surpassed its mission objectives by flawlessly conducting the hop experiment. With precision, it followed commands, firing its engines as intended, achieving a 40-centimeter elevation, and executing a safe landing, merely 30 to 40 centimeters from its original position.

This milestone is of great significance as ISRO stressed that this “kick-start” will energize future lunar missions, including human presence. Significantly, all systems performed admirably and remain in good health. After the successful hop experiment, the lander’s ChaSTE and ILSA payloads, along with the ramp, were skillfully retracted and redeployed.

On August 23, India made history with Chandrayaan-3’s successful South Pole landing, ending the disappointment from Chandrayaan-2’s earlier crash. India became the fourth nation, alongside the United States, China, and Russia, to achieve a successful lunar surface landing.

Upon landing, Vikram Lander and Pragyan rover conducted lunar tasks: detecting sulfur and recording temperature fluctuations on the surface. Instruments planned to function for one lunar day, equal to 14 Earth days.

ISRO updated that Pragyan rover finished tasks and safely entered “sleep” mode after successful completion of its duties. Rover fully charged, solar panels set for expected lunar sunrise on September 22, 2023. The world eagerly awaits a successful awakening, or Pragyan becomes India’s enduring lunar ambassador, leaving its mark on the moon.
