Kashmiri Filmmaker Mushtaaque Ali Ahmad Khan’s Journey on the International Stage

Mushtaaque Ali Ahmad Khan, the driving force behind the Kashmir World Film Festival (KWFF), recently served as a jury member at the 5th edition of the three-day ‘Nepal Cultural International Film Festival’ (NCIFF), where 37 nations participated. Along with panel members Ljubinka Stojanovic from Serbia and Magdalena Juszczyk from Poland, Mushtaaque presented his experience in a presentation titled “Filmmaking: Navigating Challenges and Celebrating Victories” in Kathmandu.

Connecting with International Filmmakers

Mushtaaque acknowledged his honor in engaging with prominent filmmakers like Eva Daoud from Bahrain, Proshoon Rahman from Bangladesh, Jan Schlenk from Germany, Arunachalam Vaidyanathan from the USA, Nipon Dholua from India, and Mahera Omar from Pakistan, among others. He characterised his time as a jury member at the Nepal festival as one of the most remarkable moments in his life, providing a chance to engage with great people from across the globe and celebrate the love for film.

Overcoming Challenges and Reviving Filmmaking in Kashmir

Mushtaaque Ali Ahmad Khan is an acclaimed actor, theatrical practitioner, broadcaster, and TV producer. He started the Kashmir World Film Festival (KWFF) and has hosted four editions in Srinagar and one in Pune, Maharashtra. His selection to the Nepal festival jury has opened a new chapter in his career, humbling him and enabling him to take the KWFF to the next level.

Despite the hurdles experienced during the militant eruption in the early 1990s, which brought his work to a stop, Mushtaaque persisted. As film filming progressively returned to Kashmir in 1999, he had a chance to act as a subject consultant on the film “Tahaan,” starring Rahul Bose and Anupam Kher. This encounter revived his interest in filming in the Valley.
