Aligarh Muslim University’s First Ever Woman Vice-Chancellor

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), one of India’s premier educational institutions, has made history by appointing its first-ever woman Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Naima Khatoon Gulrez. This landmark decision, approved by President Droupadi Murmu, marks a significant milestone in the university’s 103-year legacy.

Naima Khatoon’s Impressive Credentials

Prof. Naima Khatoon, a distinguished scholar and administrator, brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She has served as the Principal of AMU’s Women’s College since 2014 and has held various leadership positions, including Provost, Warden, and Deputy Proctor. Khatoon’s academic achievements are equally impressive, as she holds a Ph.D. in Psychology and Educational Sciences, with a focus on the socio-psychological correlates of political segregation among Hindu and Muslim youth.

Embracing a New Era of Inclusivity

The government’s dedication to fostering gender diversity and inclusivity in higher education is evident in its trend of appointing women as heads of universities in India, with Naima Khatoon’s appointment aligning with this larger trend.

This move is particularly significant for AMU, which has historically been male dominated. Khatoon has expressed her determination to address the needs of women within the university and serve as a role model for aspiring female leaders.

Naima Khatoon’s appointment comes at a crucial time, as the university navigates the ongoing general elections and the associated Model Code of Conduct. The government’s decision to approach the Election Commission of India for this appointment underscores the significance of this historic moment.

As Naima Khatoon takes on the mantle of Vice-Chancellor, she faces the challenge of upholding AMU’s legacy of academic excellence while fostering a more inclusive and empowering environment for women. Her appointment signifies the progress made in the field of higher education, inspiring young women across the country to pursue their dreams and break through glass ceilings.
