Honoring Mothers in Islam: A Timeless Tradition

Although there is no specific day in Islam designated for celebrating mothers, the Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasize the utmost importance of honouring and respecting mothers every day. Motherhood is revered as a sacred responsibility, and Honoring mothers hold a special place in Islamic teachings.

Expressing Gratitude and Performing Acts of Kindness

One fundamental way to honour mothers in Islam is to express gratitude and appreciation for their sacrifices and unconditional love. The Quran instructs believers to be grateful to both Allah and their parents, especially their mothers, who carried them through immense hardships. On occasions like Mother’s Day, Muslims are encouraged to spend quality time with their mothers, have heartfelt conversations, share meals, and offer assistance with household chores or errands.

The Rewards of Serving and Obeying Mothers

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the immense rewards associated with serving and obeying one’s mother. He famously stated, “Paradise lies beneath the feet of your mother,” highlighting the profound significance of a mother’s role and the importance of honouring her. Even if one’s mother has passed away, being kind and dutiful to maternal relatives is highly rewarded in Islam.

Prayers and Thoughtful Gestures

In addition to acts of service and obedience, Muslims are encouraged to pray for their mothers’ well-being, health, and happiness, seeking Allah’s blessings and rewards for their mothers’ sacrifices. While gift-giving is not a mandatory practice, thoughtful and meaningful gifts that cater to a mother’s interests and preferences can be a way to express love and appreciation.

In Islam, honouring and respecting mothers is not limited to a single day but is a continuous obligation and means of attaining Allah’s pleasure. By following the teachings of the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Muslims can uphold the esteemed status of mothers and cultivate a deep sense of gratitude and reverence for their selfless love and care.
